Before we go any further, let me introduce you to Rumi:

Who was Rūmī?

The great Sufi mystic and poet Rumi was famous for his lyrics and for his didactic epic Masanav-yi Maanav (“Spiritual Couplets”), which influenced mystical thought through literature.

What is Rūmī’s philosophy?

Life should be lived as a journey toward union with the one true God, which is achieved through practising love by disregarding oneself as an independent being and turning toward the truth of God’s oneness. Through spiritual guides, one lives, loves, and ascends to full knowledge of the one divine presence, then guides others in their quest.

What did Rūmī write about?

He began writing poetry because of his experiences of love, longing, and loss. Among his works are mystical love songs dedicated to his mystic teacher Shams al-Dīn, the Prophet Muhammad, and God; ghazals (lyric poems that are united by subject and symbolism, rather than the logical sequence of ideas); and robaiyat (quatrains with the rhyme scheme aaba).

Death

Rūmī lived for a few months after finishing the Mas̄navī. As a respected member of Konya society, both Christian monks and leading officials sought his company. In his burial procession, a large crowd of people of various faiths and nationalities attended, according to one of his contemporaries. His mausoleum, the Green Dome, is now a museum in Konya and is still a place of pilgrimage for Turkish Muslims.

Rumi’s Top 10 Rules for Success

Rule #1: Be grateful.

Gratitude is one of the most powerful forces in the universe. It helps us see the good things in our lives and makes them even better. If we focus on what we have, rather than what we lack, we will attract more of what we need.

Rule #2: Don’t compare yourself with others.

We often compare ourselves with other people, especially when we feel bad about ourselves. This comparison creates an internal dialogue that leads to feelings of inadequacy. Instead, try comparing yourself to who you were yesterday, not to who someone else is today.

Rule #3: Give thanks for what you have.

If you focus on what you have rather than what you lack, you will be more likely to appreciate what you do have. It’s easy to fall into the trap of focusing on what you don’t have, but instead, think about how much you have accomplished. You might also consider giving thanks for what you have, even if it isn’t perfect.

Rule #4: Do something every day that scares you.

This quote by Rumi is one of my favourites because it reminds me to take risks and try new things. I love the idea of doing something scary every day.

Rule #5: Let go of grudges.

If you hold onto grudges, you will never move forward. You must let go of grudges and forgive others.

Rule #6: The only thing worse than being talked about is not being talked about.

If you’re looking for ways to improve your online reputation, one of the easiest things you can do is simply talk about yourself. People love talking about themselves, so when you share something positive about yourself, others will likely follow suit. Research shows that people who talk more about themselves tend to receive more compliments.

Rule #7: You will never find yourself until you lose everything.

This rule comes from the famous Persian poet, Jalal ad-Din Muhammad Balkhi (1207–1273). It’s often attributed to Rumi, although there’s no evidence he ever said it. Regardless, it’s an excellent reminder to us all that we must not take ourselves too seriously. We should enjoy life while we’re here because someday we’ll all die.

Rule #8: Don’t worry if it takes longer than you think.

If you’ve been putting off starting a business, you might feel discouraged by how much work it will take. You might even start thinking that you won’t succeed at all. However, if you stick with it, you’ll eventually reach success.

Rule #9: A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.

It’s easy to think that you need to do everything yourself when you first start. In reality, you should focus on building relationships with other people who can help you along the way. This includes finding mentors, advisors, and collaborators.

Rule #10: There’s no path to happiness. Happiness is the path.

If you’re looking for success, then you’ll find it by following these rules. You’ll also find that you will become happier as you follow them.

One of my favourite quotes by Rumi:

When you’re going through hell, keep going.

This quote by the 13th-century Persian poet Jalal ad-Din Muhammad Balkhi (Rumi) has been attributed to many people over the years, but most often to his friend and fellow Sufi mystic Mevlana Celaleddin Rumi. The saying is thought to be an encouragement to those facing adversity, and it’s also used as a motto for various organizations and businesses.

Here are some quotes to help you live your dreams:

  • “The soul that hath no music in itself, / Nor is attuned to any harmony, / By the breath of beauty is made alive; / And every art and science is but a means/ To raise us nearer to the infinite.”
  • “If you want to do something, then just do it. Don’t wait until everything’s perfect. If you wait until everything’s perfect, nothing will ever happen.” -Rumi
  • “You must learn how to laugh at yourself, because only when you’re laughing at yourself can you find the courage to keep going.” -Rumi
  • “We are not human beings having a spiritual experience. We are spiritual beings having a human experience.” -Rumi
  • “The soul has dyed the colour of its thoughts. Think only noble thoughts.”
  • “I am what I think. All that I am arises with my thoughts. With a thought, I make the world.” -Buddha
  • “A man should hear a little music, read a little poetry, and see a fine picture every day of his life, so that worldly cares may not obliterate the sense of religious obligation; for these things are as flowers among thorns, and are to be valued accordingly.” -Thomas Carlyle

  • “If you look at what you have, it will increase; if you look at what you don’t have, it will decrease. If you’re looking for ways to improve your life, start by focusing on what you do have. It’s easy to become overwhelmed when you consider all the things you don’t have. Instead, focus on what you do have and use those resources to help you achieve your goals.”
  • “You are a beautiful baby, my son. Don’t let anyone tell you differently.”
  • “If you are not willing to risk the unusual, you will have to settle for the ordinary.” -Jim Rohn
  • “A man’s reach should exceed his grasp, or what’s heaven for? If you’re looking for inspiration, here are some quotes by Rumi to help you live your dreams.”
  • “Man craves winter in summer, and when winter comes, he likes it not, for he is never content with any state [of things], neither with poverty nor with a life of plenty. May man be killed! How ungrateful he is! Whenever he obtains guidance, he spurns it.” -Rumi

Conclusion

In addition to being a poet and a mystic, Rumi is also a teacher who tries to convey what he knows to others. In the end, he believes that students will have learned on their own, when the means for going further fail him, and he loses his voice.
