The expression of grace is one of ease. But ease does not necessarily mean easy. Focusing on flow often allows grace to blossom while practicing yoga. That is why it is important to pay attention to the flow of breath when we come to our mats to practice any form of yoga. In our yoga/asana practice, we become aware of our breath as we inhale and exhale.

In yoga, grace is defined as “elegance and beauty of movement.” This definition can certainly apply to poetic postures; however, it is a deeper definition that represents yoga’s philosophy. According to the yoga tradition, grace often implies devotion and surrender: devotion to the practice and surrender to God. As long as this form of grace is not attained, it is impossible for the yoga practitioner to escape the negative influences of the material world.

Grace in yoga is not simply the beauty of movement, but also presence, surrender, and mindfulness. And the state of grace is earned through discipline. It is necessary for the yoga practitioner to be present and devoted to the tradition, to renounce the material world, and surrender to the Divine. Last but not least, the practitioner must be mindful of his or her breath, the pose, and the spiritual intention behind the practice. Yoga disciples can only transcend secular experience and achieve spiritual rebirth with an attitude of grace.
